Unbuilt Russia

In 1934, the “Palace of Soviets” was planned to be taller than the tallest building in the world. But as soon as the U.S. found out, they hired a giant ape to stand atop the Empire State Building and swat at airplanes, thus shaming the Soviets into building a somewhat more modest IHOP instead.
